Pruning That Keeps a Tree Standing
Tree trimming and pruning is how a tree you want to keep stays safer and lives longer. On Canton properties the common goals are taking out dead wood before it falls, raising limbs off the roof, the driveway and the sidewalk, lightening long horizontal limbs on old maples before ice and snow load them, and correcting weak forks on younger trees while the cuts are still small. Good pruning follows the ANSI A300 standard: cuts made just outside the branch collar, no flush cuts, no stubs, and no more live crown removed than the tree can spare.
Clearance Canton expects
Canton's Section 917.05 requires owners to keep branches on their property and in the tree lawn pruned so the lowest limbs are at least 20 feet above the street, state routes and the sidewalk, where they overhang them. If an owner does not, the city can prune after 10 days' written notice and bill for it. Twenty feet clears trucks and buses on the street and gives walkers plenty of room on the sidewalk. Raising a crown to that height is best done gradually on a young tree, removing a few low limbs at a time.
Why topping is not trimming
Cutting a tree back to stubs, sometimes called topping, heading or hat-racking, makes the problem worse: the tree responds with dense, weakly attached sprouts that grow back fast and break easily, and the large cuts invite decay. Canton's ordinance defines topping and bans it as a normal practice on city, park and other public trees, with a $150 fine and replacement with three trees as the penalty. When a tree really is too big for its spot, the honest options are a proper crown reduction, cut back to side branches large enough to take over, or removal.
Trimming around wires
AEP Ohio trims along its distribution lines at least every four years and aims for 10 feet of clearance. Its crews clean up branches on maintained lawns but leave the wood. Do not let anyone trim near energized lines except utility crews; we prune the rest of the tree and leave the line side to them.
Timing in Northeast Ohio
Late winter, while trees are dormant, is a good time for most structural pruning: the branch structure is easy to see, and wounds start closing when growth begins in spring. Dead, broken and hanging limbs should come out whenever you notice them. Spring-flowering trees can be pruned right after bloom if you want to keep this year's flowers. Oaks are pruned in the dormant season to reduce the risk of oak wilt, which has been spreading in Ohio since 2019.
Pruning Types
Most trims combine two or three of these, depending on the tree and what you need.
Deadwood removal
Dead, broken and hanging limbs removed before they fall on a roof, car or person.
Crown raising
Lower limbs removed for clearance over roofs, drives, sidewalks and the 20-foot street line.
Crown thinning
Selected branches removed to cut weight and wind resistance without changing the tree's shape.
Crown reduction
Long limbs shortened back to strong side branches, the proper alternative to topping.
Structural pruning
Competing leaders and weak forks corrected on young trees while the cuts are small.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should trees be trimmed?
Lawn Love's guide suggests every three to five years for most mature trees. Young trees benefit from lighter, more frequent structural work. Dead or broken limbs should come out whenever you see them.
How high do branches need to be over the street in Canton?
Section 917.05 calls for the lowest branches to be at least 20 feet above the street, state routes and the sidewalk where they overhang. The city can prune after 10 days' written notice if an owner does not.
Can you just top my tree to make it shorter?
We do not top trees. Topping causes weak regrowth and decay, and Canton bans it on public trees. A crown reduction to strong side branches or a removal are the real options.
What is the difference between trimming and pruning?
People use the words interchangeably. Pruning usually means selective cuts for health and structure, and trimming often means cutting back for clearance or appearance. Done right, both follow the same standards.
When is the right time to prune an oak in Ohio?
During the dormant season, roughly late fall through winter. Fresh wounds in spring and early summer can attract the beetles that spread oak wilt, which the Forest Service reports has been increasing in Ohio since 2019.
