Know Which Trees Are the City's
Tree Removal in New Philadelphia works differently depending on where the tree stands. The city's own tree brochure explains that the curb strip between the sidewalk and the street is city property, that the city plants most trees there, and that it runs a tree and stump removal program on city property at no cost to homeowners. It also asks residents not to cut or trim a city tree without approval. So if the problem tree is in your curb strip, call the City Service Department before you call anyone else.
Trees on your own property
The yard trees behind the sidewalk, along the side of the house and in the back are yours to manage. Those are what we remove. We come out, look at the tree, the space around it and access, and give you a written estimate covering cutting, cleanup and the stump. New Philadelphia had about 17,677 residents and 8,122 housing units in 2020, on roughly eight square miles, so most removals here are on city lots where the tree has to come down in pieces.
Species the city does not want on its streets
The brochure lists trees it considers undesirable for street planting: green ash, because of emerald ash borer, all evergreens, box elder, silver maple, horse chestnut, catalpa, tulip tree, apple, mulberry, poplars, black locust, willows and sweet gum. Many of those are just as troublesome in a yard. Silver maples and willows drop limbs, box elder splits, and ash have been killed across Ohio by the borer. These are some of the most common trees we are asked to remove.
Planting and Arbor Day
Planting your own tree in the curb strip requires a permit from the Service Director's office, and the city publishes spacing rules: large trees 50 feet apart on strips at least 8 feet wide, nothing within 25 feet of a corner or 5 feet of a hydrant. The city has been a Tree City USA member for nearly 40 years and holds an Arbor Day planting on the last Friday in April.
River-valley setting

New Philadelphia Questions
Will the city remove the dead tree in my curb strip?
The city brochure says it runs a tree and stump removal program for trees on city property at no cost to homeowners. Call the Service Department to report it.
Can I replace a removed yard tree with a silver maple?
You can plant what you like on your own property, but silver maples grow fast, have weak wood and are on the city's undesirable list for streets. A sturdier species is usually a better long-term choice.
Can you remove a tree that is half on my property and half over the curb strip?
If the trunk is on your property, it is generally yours. If it is in the curb strip, it is the city's. When it is unclear, we will help you check with the city before any cutting.
Do you work in Dover too?
Yes, along with the surrounding Tuscarawas County townships.
How do I report a city tree problem?
Contact the City Service Department at 330-364-4491, extension 1275, at 150 East High Avenue. The Shade Tree Commission has jurisdiction over public trees.
