How a Job With Tree Removal Canton Goes

Tree Removal Canton takes down trees for homeowners in Canton and the surrounding parts of Stark County: dead and dying trees, ash killed by emerald ash borer, trees that split or uprooted in a storm, and healthy trees that have simply outgrown the spot they were planted in. We also trim, raise and thin trees that are staying, and grind stumps.

A job starts with a visit to the property, not a price over the phone. We walk around the tree and look at the trunk flare, the root zone, cracks, cavities, fungus, dead limbs and lean. Then we look at what surrounds it: the roof, the garage, the neighbor's fence, the alley wires, the driveway a truck would use and the yard a chipper would cross. On many Canton streets the houses date from the city's growth between 1890 and 1950, lots are narrow, and the only way into the backyard is a side yard or an alley. That usually decides how a tree comes down more than its height does.

We also look at where the tree stands. Canton's tree ordinance calls the grass strip between the sidewalk and the curb the tree lawn, or devil's strip, and it puts the job of removing dead trees there, and pruning branches over the street and sidewalk, on the owner of the adjacent property. Topping is banned as a normal practice on city, park and other public trees, with a fine and a three-tree replacement as the penalty. When a tree is in the tree lawn or near a park, we raise it at the estimate so you can confirm the rules with the city's Engineering Department before anything is cut. If your work will block a public street, the city requires notice to the Directors of Public Service and Safety and/or Engineering at least one business day ahead, and that gets planned into the schedule.

Trees touching power lines are a different matter. Most of Canton is served by AEP Ohio, and nobody but utility line crews should cut near energized lines. We work on the rest of the tree once the line is clear.

After the visit you get a written quote. Each tree has its own line: what will be done, how the wood and brush will be handled, whether the stump is ground, and the price. Nothing is cut until you approve it, and if something changes once the work starts, such as hidden rot in a trunk, we stop and talk to you before the price changes.

What you can expect

  • A walk-around before any number is given
  • Rigging and lowering limbs where dropping them would hit something
  • Tree-lawn and utility questions flagged before the work, not after
  • Logs left as rounds, cut for firewood, or hauled off: your choice, written down
  • Payment only for the work on the approved quote
