Old Trees in an Old County Seat

Tree Removal in Carrollton often involves trees as old as the neighborhoods around them. The village was founded as Centreville on October 4, 1815, by Peter Bohart, at a crossroads of routes linking Canton, Steubenville, New Lisbon and New Philadelphia. It was renamed Carrollton in 1834 when it became the seat of the newly created Carroll County. Today it has about 3,087 residents. Around the square and the historic Daniel McCook House, many homes have mature trees that were planted a very long time ago.

Old trees, old problems

Large, old trees can be magnificent, but they also tend to develop decay in the trunk, dead limbs high in the crown, and root problems after decades of construction, paving and grade changes. A tree that looks fine from the ground can be hollow inside. If a big tree near your house has fungal growth at the base, cracks in the trunk, or heavy dead wood, have it looked at. We will tell you whether it can be saved with pruning or should come down.

Hills and access

Carroll County sits in Appalachian Ohio, and Carrollton sits at about 1,168 feet among rolling hills. Sloped yards, retaining walls and narrow driveways can make access tricky. Where equipment cannot reach, trees are taken down by climbing and rigging, and pieces are carried or winched out. We explain the plan and the price in the estimate.

Vacant homes and neglected trees

The 2020 census found about 13.4% of Carrollton's 1,515 housing units vacant. Vacant properties often have trees that have gone untended for years. If you are buying or restoring an older home, have the trees checked early; a dead tree near the house is easier and cheaper to deal with before it falls.

Ash, beech and other regional pests

Emerald ash borer has killed ash trees all over Ohio, and Ohio State University Extension reports that beech leaf disease, found first in northeast Ohio in 2012, has spread across many counties. Spotted lanternfly is now under a statewide quarantine. Trees weakened by pests become brittle and more dangerous to remove the longer they stand, so it is better to act early when a dead or declining tree is near a home or road.

Around the square

Trees near the center of the village often stand close to sidewalks, porches and overhead lines. Those removals take more rigging and sometimes a lift, and we coordinate parking and any street use so traffic and neighbors are not blocked longer than needed.

Carrollton Questions

Can a hollow tree be saved?

Sometimes. Trees can stand for years with some hollowness if enough sound wood remains around it. We look at how much sound wood is left, what the tree would hit if it failed, and the tree's overall health before recommending removal.

Do you work outside the village in Carroll County?

Yes. We serve Carrollton and the surrounding Carroll County townships, including rural and hillside properties.

What does a stump grinder do to my lawn?

It chips the stump below grade and leaves a pile of chips. We can rake them into the hole or haul them, and you can reseed. The written estimate says which.

Will you remove a tree that fell across my driveway?

Yes. If a power line is involved, call the utility first. Otherwise, we cut the tree, clear the driveway and clean up the debris.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Carrollton?

For a tree on your own private property, generally no, but check deed restrictions and ask the village if the tree is near the street or sidewalk, where it may be public.

What does a written estimate include?

The trees to be removed, how the wood and brush will be handled, whether stumps are ground, and how the site will be left. It is the price for the job as described.
