River-Bottom Trees in Navarre

Tree Removal in Navarre starts with the river. The village sits along the Tuscarawas River in southwestern Stark County at about 961 feet, some of the lowest ground in the county. The Stark County Engineer puts the county's lowest point, 880 feet, on the Tuscarawas River in Bethlehem Township, just downstream. River-bottom soil is deep, rich and often wet, and it grows big trees fast: sycamores, cottonwoods, silver maples and willows that can reach well over the roofline.

Why that matters

Fast growth comes with weak wood in several of these species. Cottonwoods and silver maples are notorious for dropping large limbs, sometimes on calm days. Saturated soils after spring rain or a big storm loosen root plates, and that is when whole trees go over. If a tree in your yard has started to lean or the ground around its base has cracked or heaved, treat it as urgent and call (330) 433-8160.

A storm path nearby

On April 8, 2020, the National Weather Service tracked an EF-0 tornado with estimated winds of 84 mph from about two miles west of Massillon to a mile south of East Sparta, crossing more than 14 miles of southwestern Stark County. Its survey reported uprooted and damaged trees along the path, some falling onto homes. Small tornadoes like that are short-lived but leave plenty of tree work behind them.

The village

Navarre had 1,846 residents at the 2020 census, on just under two square miles. A small part of the village lies in Perry Township. Many homes are on modest village lots, with older trees close to houses and garages. Removals there are usually done in sections, with pieces lowered to the ground, rather than dropped whole.

Ash in the valley

Green ash was once common on wet river ground across Ohio, and emerald ash borer has since killed vast numbers of them. Dead ash become brittle quickly, which makes them harder to climb and more likely to fail. If you still have standing dead ash near a house, drive or road, it should be a priority. We often use lifts or rig from nearby healthy trees rather than climbing the ash itself.

Village lots and alleys

Older village blocks often have alleys behind the houses, with garages, sheds and overhead service lines along them. Those are useful for access but also tight places to work. We plan where the chipper and the truck will sit and keep the alley open as much as possible.

Navarre Questions

Why does my cottonwood drop branches on calm days?

Cottonwoods and some other fast-growing trees can shed limbs without wind, often in summer heat. It is a known trait, and it is one reason big cottonwoods near houses are frequent removal requests.

Is a tree on wet ground more likely to fall?

Yes, generally. Saturated soil holds roots less firmly, so trees on low, wet ground are more likely to uproot during storms, especially when they are in full leaf.

Can you remove a tree close to the river bank?

Usually. We pay attention to footing and where the pieces will land, and we may leave the root mass in place to help hold the bank.

Do you serve the area around Navarre too?

Yes, including Bethlehem and Perry townships and the nearby villages along the river.

Can I save my ash tree with treatment?

Healthy ash with most of their crown can sometimes be protected with insecticide treatments, which must be repeated. A tree that has already lost much of its canopy is usually past saving.

Do you clean up after a removal?

Yes. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or stacked as you choose, and the work area is raked. The estimate spells out exactly what is included.
